JT15D Engine Overhaul

When your Pratt & Whitney JT15D reaches the end of its operational life cycle, a properly executed engine overhaul restores it to OEM specifications and returns it to service for the next phase of operation. At Hale Aircraft, we perform every step of JT15D engine overhaul in-house: teardown, cleaning, inspection, component repair, parts replacement, reassembly, and final test cell verification.

With more than 30 years of focused JT15D experience, FAA Part 145 Repair Station #41ER737D credentials, and the only JT15D test cell in the Southeastern United States, Hale Aircraft delivers overhaul services that minimize downtime and maximize return-to-service confidence.

What Is a JT15D Engine Overhaul?

A JT15D engine overhaul is a comprehensive teardown, inspection, and rebuild of the entire engine to restore it to OEM-specification performance and reliability. Unlike a hot section inspection, which focuses on the high-temperature combustion and turbine areas, an overhaul addresses every section of the engine: cold section, hot section, accessory drives, gearbox, controls, and ancillary systems.

Overhaul is the most extensive maintenance event in the engine's life cycle and is typically scheduled at the manufacturer's recommended Time Between Overhaul (TBO) interval, after major operational events, or as part of a pre-purchase or fleet-renewal program.

When Is a JT15D Overhaul Required?

Several factors trigger a JT15D engine overhaul. Most operators schedule overhaul based on a combination of:

  •  Reaching the manufacturer-recommended Time Between Overhaul (TBO) interval
  • Hot section findings indicating wear extending beyond serviceable limits
  • Performance trend monitoring showing accumulated degradation
  • End-of-life condition for major components such as turbine wheels or compressors
  • Pre-purchase preparation when selling or buying a JT15D-powered aircraft
  • Following a major event (overtemp, FOD, hot start) when assessment indicates full overhaul is more cost-effective than targeted repair

Hale Aircraft's JT15D Overhaul Process

Every JT15D overhaul at Hale Aircraft follows the same disciplined sequence, fully documented and traceable to OEM and FAA standards.

Inbound Inspection & Records Review

Before disassembly we review engine logs, recent borescope reports, and trend data to identify known concerns and define the scope of work.
Direction Arrows
Step 1

Complete Teardown

The engine is fully disassembled in a controlled environment. Every component is tagged, tracked, and routed to the appropriate inspection or cleaning station.

Step 2

Cleaning & Detailed Inspection

Components are cleaned using methods appropriate to each material class. Each part undergoes dimensional inspection plus the appropriate non-destructive testing (FPI, MPI, eddy current, visual) per OEM criteria. NDT technicians are NAS-410 / SNT-TC-1A certified.

Step 3

Repair, Rework, or Replacement

Components within serviceable limits return to the assembly pool. Repairable parts move to in-house machining and welding. Components beyond limits are replaced with new, OEM-approved, or PMA-certified parts from our extensive JT15D inventory.

Step 4

Reassembly to OEM Specifications

Engine modules are reassembled to Pratt & Whitney specifications with full torque verification, hardware traceability, and complete documentation at every step.

Step 5

Final Test Cell Verification

Every overhauled JT15D is validated in our certified, correlated JT15D test cell, the only one in the Southeast, before return to service. This catches issues that on-wing testing cannot detect.

Frequently Asked Questions – JT15D Engine Overhaul

How long does a JT15D engine overhaul take?

A standard JT15D overhaul typically takes several weeks once the engine is on the bench. Complex repairs, parts availability, and inspection findings can extend timelines. Hale Aircraft’s in-house workflow eliminates the multi-week delays that occur when work is outsourced to multiple vendors.

Cost varies based on engine condition, parts required, and the scope of repair work uncovered during inspection. Hale Aircraft provides a detailed estimate after inbound inspection so you can make an informed decision before any rework begins. Customers often save by combining overhaul with engine leasing to maintain operational continuity.

A hot section inspection (HSI) addresses only the high-temperature combustion and turbine components. An overhaul is a complete engine teardown, addressing every section including cold section, gearbox, and accessories. HSI is typically a mid-life maintenance event; overhaul is end-of-life or post-major-event.

Yes. Hale Aircraft offers short-term and long-term JT15D engine leasing specifically to support operators during overhaul windows. Lease engines are tested and verified in our in-house test cell before delivery.

You receive complete documentation: inspection findings, parts traceability, NDT reports, test cell performance verification, repair records, and all required FAA and OEM compliance records, everything needed for your engine logbook and any future audit or sale.

Yes. Hale Aircraft works with operators across the United States and supports international JT15D overhauls. Our logistics team coordinates engine shipment and handles customs documentation when applicable.
